In order to be a nurse, you have to be able to keep confidential facts to yourself, or you can be fired. Also you must be patient, polite, trustworthy, and non-judgmental, among other things. Also, if your on "call" you must be ready to go at any time to work.

You will find that your job as a nurse will be more rewarding if your own personal value set aligns with the professional values held by the profession.

Generally the professional values of a profession are articulated in an ethical code.

The nursing generally places high value on things like:

  • client autonomy - promoting informed decision making
  • social justice and equity - promoting fairness and safe guarding human rights
  • health promotion - assisting individuals, families and communities to build capacity to attain wellness
  • accountability and responsibility - maintaining accountability for actions and professional growth
  • collaboration - collaborating with others to provide safe competent care
  • advocacy and public accountability - working in the best interest of the client
  • dignity - recognizing the intrinsic worth of each person

If you personal value set aligns with these values then nursing will be a rewarding profession.
