Beagles are generally lovely dogs. They are 'loyal' - unless they have their eyes set on a nice plump rabbit in the distance on a walk - and are excellent with children and other dogs. Beagles are well-suited as family pets, and will do - literally - ANYTHING for food. In fact, that is the only bad habit that I have ever come across in any beagle - if not trained properly, and in many cases, even if trained well, they will constantly scavenge for any food they can find - it's what they were bred for. This may involve begging at the dinner table, bin raiding, getting into kitchen cupboards and drawers, and dragging food from work surfaces. The number of times we have come home to find that our beagle has snatched our Pizza or steak pie, meant for our dinner, and eaten the whole thing. Apart from this, beagles are very affectionate, and will happily enjoy an evening by a cosy fire, after enjoying a nice long romp through the woods. Beagles are NOT an easy breed to train, as they would much rather enjoy chasing a fox than enjoy a pat or a stroke, and a "Good dog!" from their owner. Even with the most obedient of beagles, there isn't a 100% guarantee that he will come back when he is called, as I have often found out with mine. Beagles are pack dogs, and if considering getting one, do take into consideration the fact that he might need a friend, as there is nothing that a beagle likes better than chasing a playmate around.

Beagles are very good hunting dogs. They can use their nose very well and run at fast speed.

Like any dog, their temperament can be good or bad. So much depends on how they are raised and treated as a puppy then as an adult dog.
