He was a Confederate Lieutenant General who served as one of the most gifted cavalry and guerrilla commanders of the American Civil War. After the war he became involved in the newly formed Ku Klux Klan and opposed Reconstruction in his home state of Tennessee. Within a few years of taking over the KKK however, Forrest felt it had become too violent in regard to African Americans and other people involved with Reconstruction, and ordered it disbanded.
General Robert E. Lee was a southern gentleman and would not condone, let alone authorize or participate in assasinations! To dispell a more widely held myth, Lee did not found, organize, or even belong to the organization known as the Ku Klux Klan. Some trace the Klan as an Underground movement as far back as the fall of Gettysburg- when the CSA knew the war was lost on a strategic scale. The Klan was founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest , another CSA general, but not Lee!

John Forrest's discoveries were not so much important lands or major rivers, but his explorations were still important as they opened up areas of Western Australia about which little had been previously known. In 1869, Forrest led the search for Ludwig Leichhardt's expedition which had gone missing while travelling across Australia from east to west. This search was unsuccessful, but it gave Forrest the chance to do what he wished, which was to explore the uncharted areas of Western Australia. In 1870, Forrest surveyed the route which Edward Eyre had taken in 1840-41 from Adelaide to Albany, across the Great Australian Bight. As the main route from eastern Australia overland to the west, he realised it needed to be surveyed so a road could be built, and later a railway.

Yes. Both. Many in the North consider him evil and many in the South consider him a hero. Those who hate him point to two things: the Massacre at Fort Pillow and his involvement with the Klu Klux Klan after the war. There is a lot of discussion about both. Some even say the KKK was needed to keep the Northern scalawags from taking over the local governments of the Southern States. Then the KKK changed after Forrest resigned and it was used to terrorize the blacks. Even though Forrest was not educated, he was a great businessman before and after the war. It didn't seem to be his nature to want to kill and destroy. However, during the war he excelled in his fighting ability. The book "As They Saw Forrest" by Robert Henry is a collection of writings about General Forrest by people who knew him and even a British royalty. His name was feared by many Union soldiers. He was known to have persuaded some Union soldiers to surrender their position even when they out-numbered Forrest. His fighting abilities were held in high esteem during the war.

Pulaski, TN is said to be the place of the first organized gathering of the KKK as organized by Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The citizens of this nice town are not proud of this historical event. During a KKK gathering there a few years ago all of the local business closed and the town ignored the KKK presence there.
