Gold is valuable for three main reasons. 1) It is a rare metal. As with anything, the less of it that there is, the more people are willing to pay for it. 2) It has luster. Iron and aluminum, while more ostensibly useful than gold, lack unique color and luster-a must for jewelry. 3) Gold does not degrade. Unlike iron rusting, silver tarnishing, or copper oxygenating, gold from a thousand years ago is still basically in the same shape today. Its durability and lack of chemistry with most substances in our air mean that gold will last and last.
