Depending of the nature of the Bipolar disorder, you may not be given anti-depressants at all.
Frequent meds for bipolar disorder are Lamictal (new, powerful, low side effects, common skin rashes but rarely life threatening), lithium (very old, many side effects, may be lethal on OD, requires blood monitoring, but very strong - I love it), valproic acid (Depakine/Depakote, old and tried, requires blood monitoring), carbamazepine (Tegretol, old, requires blood monitoring).
If mania is severe enough, your doctor may prescribe you an antipsychotic like Risperdal, Seroquel (some weight gain and sedation) or Zyprexa (sedation and massive weight gain).

Bipolar Disorder is not a disease - you cannot catch it or carry it or give it to someone else. There does seem to be a genetic trait that you inherit, so that if your ancestors were bipolar, you will have a bigger chance of having it yourself, but it is a chance and not a certainty.
It is personal information
Give them a bottle of pills.
No
Why would you do that? NO!!
Some of the tests that are required in order to give a patient the diagnosis of being bipolar include a physical exam, lab tests, psychological evaluation, and mood charting.
If you were diagnosed with bipolar then you should be getting your medication from either your Psychiatrist or family doctor. If you have not been diagnosed with bipolar then you must see your family doctor who will send you to a Psychiatrist and he/she will determine what is wrong with you and give you the correct medications.
It would be so insane to break up with a person who is bipolar and you consider him bipolar even when he loves you so love doesn't see if the person is mentally challenged. Don't leave him. Give him a new hope to live and be with him.
I think it is believed to act faster than SSRIs, within two weeks. But give it a month or two before changing it.
