Rusting is a form of corrosion specific to iron. Rusting is the process of degradation by oxidation of iron metal to an oxide-hydroxide compound. The cation in this compound is Fe (II). The anions are O (-2) and OH (-1). When iron turns into this compound, it becomes brittle and weak; this is why it flakes and exposes more iron to be rusted. There are things we can do to mitigate or reduce the effects of rust. Surfaces can be painted (this protects the metal from the environment containing oxygen and water, which are necessary for rusting to occur), or can be galvanised (a thin layer of zinc is coated onto the iron by dipping it in molten zinc, and zinc resists corrosion). We can also plate iron or steel (which is mostly iron) with chromium, nickel or some other metal that stands up to corrosion better than iron or steel.

Objects rust if they contain the element Iron, which reacts with Oxygen to form either Red Rust which is Iron (III) Oxide Fe2O3, or Black Rust which is Iron (II) Oxide FeO. In general, water is necessary as a catalyst for the formation of rust; salt is also a powerful catalyst for rusting. Red Rust (reddish-brown and powdery) will form where there is plentiful Oxygen. Black Rust will form in Oxygen-poor environments such as buried objects, underwater objects or dirt-caked metal like the underbody of an automobile. Black Rust will slowly convert to Red Rust upon continued exposure to air.

Rusting is a simple term for oxydisation. Oxygen will attack unprotected metals on an atomic level and break it down. That is why metals that rust must be painted or oiled to create a seal between the metal and the air

When rusting of iron take plce?

When Iron became in contact with water and oxygen or other strong oxidants or acids the rusting took place. The rusting is an electrochemical process which started with the transfer of electrons form iron to oxygen. If salt is present then it also accelerate the rusting process.

How oxygen is needed for rusting and decaying to take place?

Oxygen is a very important agent needed for rusting and decaying to take place. Oxygen binds with the surface and creates water while breaking down the substance.

Which two conditions need to be present for rusting to take place?

Air and water.

Is non rusting metal a physical change?

If by non rusting you mean it is in the same state it was made in then it wouldn't be part of any change. But if something is rusting it would be a chemical change because the metal is changing composition and it is not the same metal it was in the first place.

How thing rust?

Rusting is the process of formation of Iron Oxides on meatls most commonly Iron. Rusting can only take place in presence of three things : IRon , Water , and Air or Oxygen. If even one of these is absent rusting cannot occur.
