Three planets, Earth, Venus and Mars, all have greenhouse effects from carbon dioxide (CO2) in their atmosphere.
Greenhouse Effect.
terestrial
The trapping of heat by the Earth's atmosphere is called the greenhouse effect. During the greenhouse effect, radiation becomes entrapped which results in the heating of the Earth.
The trapping by the greenhouse gases of the long wavelength radiation (infrared) leads to more heating and a higher resultant temperature.
Long wave radiation emitted by the sun reflects off earth's surface and is absorbed by heat trapping gas in the atmosphere. Nitrogen and oxygen do NOT absorb infrared radiation, but CO2, CH4, and H2O DO trap heat.
The trapping of heat by the Earth's atmosphere is called the greenhouse effect. During the greenhouse effect, radiation becomes entrapped which results in the heating of the Earth.
Trapping infrared radiation (rising from the surface of the earth) keeps the atmosphere warm enough for life. This has been happening for hundreds of millions of years. However, when too much heat is trapped, as is happening now, then the atmosphere starts getting warmer. This is called global warming. This is a bad thing!
The greenhouse effect needs:An atmosphere that contains greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide etc.Heat from the sun (ultraviolet radiation) that warms the earth.Heat from the warm earth (infrared radiation) that rises into the atmosphere and is captured by the greenhouse gases. The greenhouse effect is a good thing. If we didn't have it the earth would be too cold for us to live on. The problem now is that we have added too much greenhouse gas, and the atmosphere is trapping too much heat causing global warming. This global warming causes climate change.
greenhouse effect
Less than a quarter of the sunlight falling on venus reaches the surface. Light that gets through the clouds warms the ground which, in turn, releases the heat in the form of infrared radiation. Like glass trapping heat in a green house, the atmosphere traps the infrared radiation, so the temperature on Venus builds up and is always very hot
When in the atmosphere, they "trap" or reflect back outgoing infrared radiation (that Earth would normally shine out into space) so that the average heat loss of the Earth is reduced. This causes the atmosphere to heat up slightly. This is called "global warming" They are called "greenhouse gasses" because the glass in a greenhouse has a similar effect, warming the inside of the greenhouse by trapping the Sun's heat.
it allows solar radiation to penetrate to the surface!
