The coconut is a large seed or nut, it is not a fruit per se any more than a tomato is a fruit (of the plant). The part we eat is the internal part of the seed, coconuts have husks that encase the brown "Bowling ball" we see whole in the store so it'll float on the ocean to a new island to take root. But in a nutshell, it's a huge seed :)
