In ancient times several kinds of trees grew along the banks of the Nile: date palms, doum palms, persea, the baq, acacia, tamarisk, mimosa, lemon trees, willows and sycamores. The doum has since become extinct in Egypt.

Papyrus reeds grew in huge swathes along the river, reaching about 9 feet tall, along with white and blue lotus. There were also cornflowers, poppies, mandrakes, chrysanthemums, mallows, iris, larkspur, jasmine, ivy and other wildflowers.

Papyrus became extinct in Egypt by the 18th century AD and was re-introduced late in the 19th century.
