It is on a convergent boundary ,when tectonic plates ( large slabs of rock sliding over the mantle) collide with each other. When the tectonic plates come together they push the crust up creating mountains. Then if it is occurring with either and ocean and ocean plates or ocean and continent plates then the less dense plate will subduct (sink underneath) the other plate causing the subducted plate to melt, which will create magmatic plumes that will rise through the mountain and eventually will erupt as a volcano.
