Sadly, I think the most common reason for picking a political party is "Because that's what my parents were".

The inability for different political parties to work together for the common good, and the tendency for one party to sabotage or block good works done by the other party simply from malice or spite. A common complaint these days is that political parties are more concerned with being in power than with actually helping the country.
In 1789 there were no political parties. In fact Washington warned about the formation of parties and how they would put their interests before the common good of the people. Looks like he was right.
