Pope Urban VIII was actually a friend of Galileo and supported his work. However, the Pope told Galileo he could not publish his hypothesis of a sun centered universe as fact when he had no proof. Galileo said he had no absolute proof but published it anyway and then when on to write sarcastic articles about the Pope. This did not set well with Urban so he had Galileo put under house arrest where he spent the rest of his life.

Why did Catholic Church leaders oppose Galileo and heliocentric model of the universe?

Church leaders of the time were open to the heliocentric model, but it could not be proven at the time. Galileo was an arrogant man. He began to proclaim it as fact and leave the arena of Astronomy an argue in the theological realm. With the permission of his friend the Pope he wrote a paper on the model where he was forbidden to advocate for it, only present arguments for and against. In it he used a character to make argument the Pope made. The Pope saw this a ridiculing him and thus the trouble began.

What was the Pope's reaction of Galileo's teachings?

The Pope ask Galileo if he could prove his heliocentric theory of the universe. Galileo said no, he had no proof. The Pope told him he should not be teaching it as fact since it was only an hypothesis. Galileo then continued to teach it as a fact and also began writing and publishing sarcastic arrticles about the pope and other members of the Roman Curia. Most had been supportive of him up until that point. However, he lost his support and was subjected to the Inquisition who put him under house arrest for the remainder of his life.Copernicus had originally developed the hypothesis and had no problem with the Church since he clearly stated in his writings that it was not yet proven. Galileo's ego is what got him into trouble, not his scientific work.
