It showed the British that Americans were sick of being oppressed and that public American opinion was beginning to favor revolution. It was just evidence that the Tea Act was the 'straw that broke the camels back.' The Americans were ready for all our revolution at that point, but the Tea Party was the first bold step taken by American colonials against the British.

+++They were colonials but they were still British. America had not become independent.
