every gear meshes at a certain level of RPMs . having it to mesh with alot of force would eventually cause destruction due to the inability of getting enough lube for the gears..henceforth metal impact produces shavings which eventually travels between the gears..over time the gear will become out of place or freer than when it was from factory.

The car isn't necessarily shifting into neutral its just staying in a lower gear and not shifting to the next gear, check your transmission fluid.

I have a 700r4 transmission and in drive it shifts from 1st to 2nd but then into neutral know what's wrong?

It's not shifting into neutral, the 3rd gear "drive" band is slipping. Time for rebuild.

Why do you have to jam your Chevy Malibu in park for it to start?

If your pressing your brake when shifting it could be the neutral and park sensor. Or the linkage. If its the linkage you might have problems with your transmission slipping and shifting by its self or into certain positions easyly than others.

When at a stop light should you shift into neutral?

Not required. In an auto transmission the gear is at its lowest when the brake is engaged and uses the same amount of fuel as in neutral. In manual transmission, I have seen few people shifting to neutral but again it is not required, you may put it at the lowest gear and keep your brake and clutch engaged while at stop light.

Does shifting into neutral damage transmission?

Any unnecessary shifts cause additional wear on the shift mechanism, but that's a minor consideration. At a long signal light or train crossing, it's better for the transmission to shift into neutral than to keep it in drive with foot on the brake, or if a manual, better in neutral than holding in the clutch all that time.

How do you stop a car from spinning out?

One of the ways of stopping a car from spinning out is shifting the automatic transmission into a neutral one. The other way is by slowly lifting the foot from the accelerator.

On a six speed manual transmission do you need to use all six gears or can you use only five to minimize the enormous amount of shifting required?

It will not harm the transmission to skip a gear (any gear) while up shifting. You go into neutral during each shift, the transmission doesn't know which gear you came out of. The transmission only matches speed to the engine and to the wheels for the gear its in. Be careful during down shifting, you don't want to skip too far ahead and run the RPS's too high.

Can you tow a 2000 Honda Accord with all four wheels down?

AnswerIt's not really good for it...But make sure the transmission is in neutral and check the Transmission fluid to make sure it's full.It is essential that the shifit into neutral is immediatly preceded by placing the transmission into "Drive".Shifting from Park-to-Reverse-to-Neutral DOES NOT place the hydraulic switching to a towable configuration.Shifting from Drive to Neutral does.Put the ignition switch to "Accessories" position to free the steering wheel lock.Honda recommends starting the engine every 200 miles of towing and shift to Drive for a minute and then back to Neutral.
