Texas
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War in 1848. Mexico surrendered hundreds of thousands of square miles of land, which later became all or part of ten states: the State of Texas, which at the time of the Treaty included parts of Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico, was well as Nevada, Utah, Arizona and the southernmost portion of California.
Texas gained much of the land controlled by Mexico. Texas became an independent republic. the United States got control of the Mexican Cession. the United States gave control of California to Mexico.
The "Mexican Cession" was the vast area of land constituting most of the present Southwest United States, from California eastward to New Mexico. The lands were ceded to the US in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The cession amounted to more than 1/3 of the total area of pre-war Mexico, including all or part of the current US states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. The US settlement to Mexico totalled $18.5 million. Five years later, the US purchased a much smaller disputed border area for $10 million in the Gadsden Purchase.
The Mexican Cession was the result of a war caused by the Americans attempting to gain Mexico's land. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marked the peace. It was in 1848 that the United States gained 500,000 square miles, increasing the size of the U.S by 25%. The Senate ratified the treaty in March of 1848. The states of California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, most of Arizona were formed from this land.

A formal relationship was created as the result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended that conflict in 1848.
