The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was first dedicated on November 11th, 1921, by President Warren G. Harding at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate the unknown servicemen of World War I. This followed after Congress enacted on March 4th, 1921, to bury an unidentified American serviceman from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater.
The Tomb Sarcophagus sits at the head of the grave of the World War I Unknown, but commemorates the unknown servicemen of World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. On May 30th, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated the tomb to the unknowns of World War II and to those of the Korean war.
Although later exhumed due to identification through DNA testing on May14th, 1998, the remains of an unknown soldier from Vietnam also served to commemorate that war's unknown soldiers. The funeral was dedicated by President Ronald Reagan on May 28, 1984.
