President Benjamin Harrison signed the Act of Admission papers for both North Dakota and South Dakota on November 2, 1889.

November 2, 1889. North Dakota was the 39th or 40th state admitted to the United States. No one knows for sure which. South Dakota was admitted the same time, and the Secretary of State helping the president signing the papers kept them hidden, so no one could see which one the president signed first.
North Dakota's statehood date is November 2, 1889, so North Dakota celebrated their Centennial, or 100 years of statehood, in 1989.
There were many people who played a part in starting South Dakota. Territorial Governor Nehemiah Ordway moved the Dakota Territory capital out of Yankton, South Dakota to Bismarck, North Dakota. President Grover Cleveland signed the act of Congress that divided the Dakota Territory into two parts and authorized both parts to set up government in preparation for statehood. Arthur C. Mellette was elected as the first governor. President Benjamin Harrison signed the statehood proclamation on November 2, 1889.
Before statehood, North Dakota was part of the Dakota Territory. The Dakota Territory was named for the Dakota Sioux settlements in the area. At the time of statehood, what was left of the Dakota Territory was split into two states, North Dakota and South Dakota.
