What causes back firing on a ford explorer and it to idle rough and want to cut out when you try to give it gas.

The firing order for a 1995 Ford Explorer is 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 6. The number one cylinder is on the front left as you face the car.
1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6
Need year and engine size in order to provide an answer.

My Haynes repair manual shows the firing order for a Ford 4.0 L OHV engine as 1-4-2-5-3-6
1997 ford explorer,5.0 is miss firing on cylinder 4 and i don,t have a clue why the miss sometime, could it be the fuel or something else?

The 5.0 L ( 302 cubic inch ) V8 used in the Ford Explorer has a firing order of : 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 according to the owners manual
what side is the number one cylinder? is it the right front?
