Well, if you get it wrong the front wheel can lock up and cause you fall or go over the bar. But the front brake is the most efficient one, so you should really train on using it. Keep your arms braced and your weight to the back of the bike and you're good to go.

is it a front wheel drive? if so the cv shaft on that side could be almost about to fall apart. or it could be the wheel bearing.

Any number of things can cause a steering wheel to shake back and forth. It could be a bad wheel bearing indicating a wheel is about to fall off. It could be a bad tire or bushing. Without checking it out personally, I can't tell.
