Answer:

The social and economic problems caused the decline of the Roman Republic.

Answer:

Under the Republic, there was a gradual shift in power from a small number of wealthy patricians to a much greater number of plebeians. Toward the end of the time during which this was happening, large numbers of relatively poor farmers were called off to wars, and returned home to farms that were being neglected and falling into ruin. Wealthy landowners bought large numbers of farms for low prices, driving the displaced farmers to Rome, swelling the population of the poor, and making it possible for people to be elected to office by appealing to the needs of poor people.

Leaders arose to address the issues of the times. In early times, great men took their thanks in the form of public honors and acclaim, but these new leaders were interested in gaining and maintaining power. A series of dictators appeared; Marius, Sulla, and Pompey were all people with great names and extensive powers, who disagreed with each other, making the direction of the political system move first in one direction and then in another, depending on their personal views. There were civil wars.

Groups of political leaders appeared, the men of the First and Second Triumvirates, whose purpose was to stabilize Rome under their command. The issue was not political so much as raw power providing stability. The First Triumvirate collapsed as the three men in it began to try to take power from one another. Julius Caesar, the greatest of them, was assassinated, and a second Triumvirate was formed, only to collapse similarly. There was a difference in the second collapse, however, which was that Octavius was left with all the power. The senate declared him Augustus, and the empire began.

The Roman republic was brought down by the weight of imperial expansion. The central government had become dysfunctional, and lost control over the provinces (conquered territories), Corruption was rampant. The governors of the provinces became unruly and treated their provinces as if they were their personal fiefs. There were military commanders who used military violence or the threat of it to get what they wanted. in 71 BC Crassus and Pompey encamped their troops outside Rome to have themselves elected as consuls (the two annually elected heads of the Republic). Pompey was not even eligible on the grounds of being below the required age and of not having served some public offices which were required before the consulship. Sulla was the first man who entered the city of Rome with troops to start his first civil war against Marius, even though Roman religion forbade the bearing of arms within the city walls.

Another problem in the Late Republic was the increase in the number of dispossessed peasants who lost their land to the expanding landed estates which used slave labour. These people flocked to Rome to try to eke out a living, swelling the masses of the poor in the city.

The problem of poverty led to the conflict between the populares and the optimates. The former was a political faction which championed the cause of the poor and tried to introduce reforms to help them. The latter was a conservative political faction which favoured the aristocracy and opposed reforms.

In the last 64 years of the Republic there were 12 civil wars. Most of them were related to clashes between strong military leaders and the conflict between populares and optimates spilling into violence. These civil wars eventually led to the fall of the Republic.
