Sulfur is not removed from molasses. If you have seen molasses bottles that say "unsulphured" (old-fashioned spelling), it means that sulfur dioxide was not used in processing the molasses. Most molasses today is unsulfured.
No - it is not really needed. Molasses (unrefined sugar) is a preservative in its own right. If you were to use an extra, it would tend to be sodium metabisulfite which admittedly is a source of Sulfur dioxide.

If the fuel is coal, you simply have to switch to a coal with a lower sulfur content. You can remove the SOx from the flue gas with ammonia scrubbing. If the fuel is fuel oil a lower sulfur fuel oil can be used. Otherwise the oil must be treated in a hydrodesulfurization unit which is probably not economical due to the hydrogen required. If the fuel is natural gas, sulfur can be absorbed by absorption with a sulfur free amine such as MDEA (monodiethanolamine). The sulfur is later removed from the amine during the amine regeneration process which results in a sulfur rich stream.

It was a pure yellow crystalline form of elemental sulfur known as sublimed sulfur, or "flowers of sulfur." This is a fungal infection of the lungs that is endemic to the U.S. Southwest.
