Well there are many programs for making games. For 3D game making there are softwares like UDK (unreal development kit, Epic Games), which can be downloaded from UDK.com. UDK has the best graphics than any nother game making program. It's free, and plus they made gears of war bullet storm unreal tournament 3 and countless other games with it. But UDK is a really hard program for beginers. There are others too like unity. Although UDK is better than unity. There is one like UDK it is called Cryengine 3. It has great graphic like UDK, they made games like Crysis 3 and stuff with it. plus cry engine doesn't need a exe file. It is a zip fie. the program is free like UDK. You can download it at crydev.net! And then there is another one called Darkgdk. But it isn't free. If you want a very advanced software: there is a really hard but good one from autodesk called scaleform. They worked with many companies. They even worked with UDK cryengine and many others. Scaleform isn't free and it is really advanced. They made game such as mass effect, epic mickey free realms you don't know jack all ratchet and clanks and more. I sure hope this helped
