The technology developed in the 1950-1990's we use today. Your cell phone technology was first made in 1971 and the satellite TV dates from the first one in 1957. It is the same with GPS and even the computer technology grew out of the space program.
Nope, we don't own our own space program, like America's NASA
President Reagan's nuclear defense plan, known as the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or "Star Wars" program, aimed to develop a defense system against intercontinental ballistic missiles. It involved the research and development of advanced technologies such as lasers and satellites to intercept and destroy incoming missiles. The successful launch of the Soviet sputnik had a galvanizing effect on the people and the science program of America. It was quite a shock to discover that the Soviets had surpassed America in their space technology, which could have serious military implications, in terms of intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as other possible implications. We now know, for example, that reconnaissance satellites are also of great military importance, and so are GPS satellites. The US government immediately began an accelerated program of research and development of new space technology, which in due course resulted in the US moon landing in 1969, and many other great technological accomplishments. The USSR was never able to regain the lead it originally had.

Missiles! When the Soviets (Russians) launched man's first satellite (Sputnik) into outer space in 1957 that indicated that they would have the "edge" in launching ICBMs (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles) against the US. Like control of the air (air superiority) for warfare, control of space (space superiority) would dictate who would win the next war.
