The Sherman Antitrust Act prohibited interference with free trade. Trusts were business organizations that aimed to restrict the flow of goods and money in the economy, and by setting up an antitrust act Sherman attempted to prohibit this sort of interference.
The main organisation that is associated with trade in Europe is the European Union. There is also the European Free Trade Association. It only has 4 countries that are members, compared to the European Union's 28 member countries. Some European Union members have in the past been members of the European Free Trade Association. The two organisations do work together.
It started as "free trade" under the EU. Then it became the government . . . somehow.
It means international trade which is relatively unencumbered with tariffs, and also in which member nations are frequently prohibited from making regulations or passing laws which might impair the import of goods from other countries.
