What property allows water striders to skate across the surface?
What characteristic of water allows it to support the weight of objects more dense than water?
Surface Tension-Surface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force. It is revealed, for example, in floating of some objects on the surface of water, even though they are denser than water, and in the ability of some insects (e.g.Water striders) and even reptiles (basilisk) to run on the water surface. This property is caused by cohesion of like molecules, and is responsible for many of the behaviors of liquids.

Which property of water allows things to float?
There is NO property of water that allows things to float. Floating in not a property of a substance. It is the difference in density of two objects that allows one to be buoyant when surrounded by the other. This a balloon can float on air, A steel ship can float on water and oil can float on water.

What is water surface tension?
Here are some explanations of surface tension: Surface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid that causes it to behave as an elastic sheet. It allows insects, such as the water strider (pond skater, UK), to walk on water too. It allows small objects, even metal ones such as needles, razor blades, or foil fragments, to float on the surface of water, and it is the cause of capillary action. 5.18 pounds / feet at 0 degree Celsius. Or as I remember it is 72 dyne / centimeter at 25 degree Celsius. The surface tension of water is the force required in order to float at the water's surface, hence making water to behave like an elastic sheet. Water surface tension is contractive tendency of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force. The beading of water on a waxy surface, such as a leaf, is an example of water surface tension.
