"Separation of church and state"... which is actually never stated in the constitution. Actually, the constitution said, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..." The Framers of the Constitution were painfully aware of the British "state religion" and as such declared that there would be no official religion of these United States. Athiests and other zealots have managed to turn that simple statement into a mandate that we can't show the 10 commandments in a courthouse, can't say prayers in school, and some even want to take "In God we Trust" off the money. All those guys wanted to do was keep us from establishing a National Religion... they didn't even care if STATES established a religion. Yet you'll get strong rhetoric from the Athiests and other zealots, presenting what they consider to be a compelling argument to the contrary. The whole issue is very subjective.
The US Constitution is the basis for all laws enacted in this country. No law may be passed that is contrary to any of the provisions of the Constitution.
