It was more a matter of 44 men who took the major step of declaring the colonies free of the king. Once the deed was done the rest of the colonies were drawn into it bit by bit. It came down you are either for or against the idea. Even in Britain there were sides. The British public and politicians who were for the colonist wore a particular shade of blue in support of the cause.
