Most soldiers were not punished, however, two of the soldiers were tried with manslaughter and had the letter "M" branded into their thumb. Although this was considered a smaller punishment then most had hoped for, the branding was to make sure that if they were to be tried with murder again, they were not to get away with it. Out of the two soldiers that were punished, I only know that one was Hugh White- the officer who was guarding the Customs House.

The English soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre were put on trial. Two of them were found guilty of manslaughter and were branded on the thumb as punishment, while the other six soldiers were acquitted.
