What purpose did a duel serve?

It served the purpose of becoming president or getting revenge on someone else. For example, Aaron Burr felt that Alexander Hamilton had disrespected him. A duel was the only answer as far as Burr was concerned. Each man chose a pistol and stood back to back. They turned and fired to each other. When the smoke cleared, Alexander Hamilton lay dead. An illustrious career was ended with a single shot.
