They must know the flora and fauna of the area. They must know the local language and they must be capable as a translator from that language into: French, English and German or Spanish. # They must know the locals and also be remote from them in terms of any act of favoritism. # They must be an honest broker of their services. # They should be qualified at some level in health, health care or first aid. # They should be competent in at least two or three other languages although fluency is not mandatory. # It would be very nice if they were all amateur archeologists. # It would be super if they were enthusiastic and congenial. They can be and often are a great benefit to the serious traveller. Far to often they are only a middleman between the locals and the tourist, taking a profit from each. The best of the best can be found through local Universities and Museums.
