There are different levels of elder care, and each one has their own requirements:
1).Companion care: you are there for safety, security, socialization, etc.. You do not need licensing HHA, STNA, CNA for this type of care for the most part
2).Partial Care: you provide partial care as far as assisting them with every day care: ambulation, assistance changing their cloths, assisting them to the bathroom & shower, meal preparation, & clean up, etc.. This level of care you really need to be certified and or have years of experience, along with CPR & First Aid, because often times this level of care, the client needs are greater, meaning their chance of falls are higher than the companion care level
3).Total Care: This is where you should have 1 or more certifications, CPR, First Aid and have 5+ years of experience. You are dealing with a client that needs to be lifted more than 20 lbs, are far more of a fall risk, may or may not be using a hoyer lift (adult crane) etc.. As with all levels of care you are in essence a lifeguard. You have to protect yourself, so you can be there to protect your client. With Total Care they are depending on you knowing how to move them around safely and easily for both them & you. The less you jossle them around the happier they are that you are there.
ALL workers should have a great attitude, be willing to be helpful, have a clear criminal background, free of drugs & alcohol, be reliable, have reliable transportation, and have a clear DMV when driving clients around.
