A:
Saintliness, great communicator and fundraiser, and hypocrisy are all qualities that come to mind for someone with an informed, balanced understanding of Mother Teresa. Her achievements have been exaggerated by the Catholic Church, greatly in need of role models such as Mother Teresa, but her fundraising abilities are undeniable. Her support for the paedophile priest, Father Donald McGuire, is probably the greatest blot on her memory.
Mother Teresa was a living saint. Her sole goal was to help people even when she had little to offer. She has her critics, especially for those with an anti-Catholic attitude and who understood nothing about Mother Teresa's mission. Some falsely accuse her of aiding a pedophile priest.
Actually, the extent of scandal of sexual abuse by priests did not really come into the public view until after the death of Mother Teresa. Add to this the fact that neither Mother Teresa nor her Missionaries of Charity watched the news, listened to the radio or read newspapers. With her upbringing she could not comprehend that priests would do such a thing and that some bishops would try to cover it up. In the case of Father McGuire, he was a close friend and associate of Mother Teresa and had held numerous retreats and training for the members of her order. Father McGuire, himself, revealed the allegations that had been made against him. Mother Teresa was assured by the leadership of the Jesuit order that the allegations were entirely false. Based on this information she wrote a letter of support for the priest. It was several years after her death that the sordid details of Father McGuire's secret life were made public. Mother Teresa became another victim of the pedophile priest.
Mother Teresa was a complex person, known for her saintliness but reportedly also having a darker side. Undoubtedly her good works will long be remembered, but she had her faults and was perhaps not the truly great person portrayed by the Church publicity machine.
SF Weekly reports that when she had the opportunity to report a paedophile priest to the secular authorites, so that justice could be done, she failed to do so, even encouraging the Church hierarchy to return him to active ministry. According to documents said to have been obtained by SF Weekly, she showed loyalty to one of her favourite priests, Donald McGuire, who was removed from ministry for sexually abusing a Bay Area boy in 1993. She urged that he be returned to work as soon as possible. The priest resumed active ministry, as well as his predatory habits. Eight additional complaints were lodged against him in the coming years by various families, leading to his eventual arrest on sex-abuse charges in 2005. Her actions delayed justice for Father McGuire's previous victims and led to the suffering of even more innocent young children.
