Questions should be asked about what services are provided and the fees for each service. You should also ask about previous clients the advisor has helped and success stories.

What does it mean if your in person interview is changed to a telepone interview?

It probably means that the interviewer has decided to save you and him/her a bit of time by doing the initial interview by phone. This will filter the number of candidates down so there are less face to face interviews to be done. In a phone interview the aim is to ask key questions which if you give the wrong answer you will fail. For example if you can't drive and have applied to be a taxi driver you will fail.

The Financial Planning Process – Part One?

If you have worked with or a financial planner in the past you may know that there is generally a set process to financial planning. This financial planning process has six steps. They are: 1. Establish and define the advisor-client relationship 2. Determine goals and gather data 3. Analyze and evaluate the data 4. Develop and present a plan 5. Implement the plan 6. Monitor the plan Whether you realized it or not, your advisor most likely follows these six steps. I’d like to take a closer look at each step in the process. First, the relationship between you and the advisor must be established. This step started before the initial contact was even made. If the advisor comes highly recommended to you by someone you trust you probably already have a good feeling about them. If the planner you’re about to meet with cold-called you in the middle of the day, you may have a completely different set of expectations going into that initial meeting. This phase should include an initial meeting in which you get to sit down with your advisor and ask any questions you may have, share what your goals are, and discuss any concerns or “hot” points you may have. This is where you try to decide if this is someone with which you can actually work. The second step is to determine goals and gather data. This may be done as part of the initial meeting or may require more face-time in the form of additional meetings. Many advisors have a set of questions they ask and you may be asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire regarding your present financial state as well as your goals for the future. Also, don’t be surprised if your new planner asks for copies of financial statements, insurance policies, investment portfolio returns, and asks probing questions to try to determine your investment risk tolerance. The third step is to analyze and evaluate the data. This will usually be done by the planner and/or members of her staff when you’re not around. (I know because it used to be my job to gather all the data, crunch all the numbers, perform the analysis, and to develop a plan.) I will discuss the last three steps in the process in more detail in my next post, so stay tuned.

What different types of question can you ask in an interview?

There are a number of different job interview formats. The traditional job interview - this is the most common type fo job interview that includes standard interview questions such as "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" The behavioral interview - this type of interveiw is becoming more popular. It goes beyond just looking at the candidate's educational and work history to determine the right fit, asking the candidate for specific examples of past behavior as they relate to the job requirements. For example the candidate may be asked to provide an example of when they had to solve a complex problem at work. The panel interview - a number of those involved in the decision-making process from different parts of the organization interview the candidate at the same time each asking different questions The phone interview - companies use the telephone interview to narrow down the initial pool of job candidates to a more manageable number for a face-to-face interview.
