The Constitution created by our Founding Fathers called for the senators to be elected by state legislators not by popular vote. Thus bias against direct vote/ popular vote for senators.

They did not trust the general public to vote wisely.
My opinion: They would be thrilled with universal suffrage (every adult can vote regardless of race or gender). They would be horrified with everything else.
