The higest rank president George Washington attained was that of General of the Armies. It was awarded posthumously in 1976. He also held the position as Senior Office of the Army (1798-1799) and Comander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (1775-1783).

There is no "rank" with a president except he is commander and chief of the armed forces. Since Washington was the first president he had few forces to command right after the war.
