The serpent may have tempted Eve instead of Adam, because it was thought at the time of the creation of the story that women are easier to convince and are thus more gullible. Another reason could be that Adam and the other creatures in the Garden did not trust the Serpent, and Eve did not know whether to believe others in the Garden, or to make her own assumptions.
