All veins (except for the pulmonary vein) receive and carry oxygen poor blood. This oxygen poor blood enters the heart through the superior & inferior venae cavae to the right atrium and ventricle. It is then carried by the pulmonary artery to the lungs for oxygenation.
The reason is that any blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart is called an artery. The pulmonary artery is the one that carries deoxygenated blood away from the heart (hence, artery) to the lungs (pulmonary) for the blood to become oxygenated.
With one exception, veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. The largest and last blood vessel they pass through is called the superior vena cava.
The exception is the Pulmonary Vein, which carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart to be pumped to the rest of the body.
Low oxygen blood from all parts of the body enter the right atrium of the heart through the inferior vena cava and the superior vena cava.
