I did this for The USS Randolph and found a couple of people who knew my Grandfather during the war and a few people who didn't but helped me alot with my research. I checked the organizations of the Infantry Divisions that were formed in WW2 and the 251st Infantry Regiment was not in any of these divisions. If a regiment was not part of a division, then it was an independent unit and possible a training unit in the US. I checked the following reference for units that served in WW2 and Korean War and it does NOT list a unit by that name/identity.
