Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park contains around 244,000 acres of buttes, pinnacles and spires along with the largest, protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. Sixty-four thousand acres are designated official wilderness. On a personal note. coming in on a windy night, it eerily feels like you have landed on the moon!

The Badlands in Badlands National Park contain reptile fossils (including alligator fossils), but do not contain dinosaur fossils. Note that "Badlands" refers to a type of geographical feature, which is not only found in Badlands National Park.
The canyons in Badlands National Park in South Dakota were formed by the depostion of layers composed of tiny grains of sediments such as sand, silt, and clay, and then by erosion when the Cheyenne River captured streams and rivers flowing from the Black Hills into the Badlands region.
