Abraham, besides being one of the wisest men of antiquity, a man of contemplation, learning and teaching, who built altars to God and called out in His name (Genesis ch.12), also insisted that pious words and deeds be accompanied with acts of kindness to others. He and Isaac dug wells for public use (Genesis ch.26), he planted an orchard for public enjoyment (Genesis 21:33), he entertained wayfarers lavishly (Genesis ch.18), he gave tithes (Genesis ch.14), he prayed for others (Genesis ch.18), and he insisted upon paying the full price for a purchase and not taking for free (Genesis ch.23).
These are examples which the Torah gives us in order to indicate that Abraham was constantly behaving in like manner. He was a pillar of high moral standards, which were incorporated in the traditions which he founded; and we are expected to continue in his footsteps.
Tradition holds that Abraham founded Judaism in Israel, around 2000 BCE.
