"The Klickitat Indians believed in an almighty who had created the land for their use, providing it with fish, roots, and berrie for their food. They believed in an afterlife which they called "The Happy Hunting Grounds," where everything was restored to health and perfection. They believed that every object was endowed with a spirit.
In earlier times they practiced the Guardian Spirit Cult which required that a youth sought spiritual power by going out during adolescence on a long and lonely fast. Here he stayed without food or water, and while faint and semi-conscious, he was visited by a spirit which endowed him with power to be successful. He received a special tailsman in the form of a song or dance to express his newly given power.
The Indians seemed to want to believe the missionaries, but it was an evanescent interest which wavered if they thought they were offered a better thing by another missionary. even when they did accept the christian faith, they expected a reward of food or clothing for attending services. It is doubtful that they had much real understanding of the doctrines, which were very different from anything they had known before."
