Let us Box the Compass- In countries that have Royalty- the First Family is assumed to have a leading role in the spiritual life of the Nation or Empire- so we start off with Queen Elizabeth II- who is the head of the Church of England ( Episcopal, stateside) The abbreviation C.O.E. in England almost universally stands for Church of England- not Corps of Engineers- She wears many hats but not a Construction Helmet! On to the Netherlands- The Dutch Royal Family is Dutch Reformed- and of the House of Orange. ( Oranje in Dutch). The Danish Royal House is evangelical Lutheran, as are the Swedes and Norwegians. In the Scandinavian countries the Lutheran church is also Episcopal- they have Bishops as an ecclesiastical rank. Spain is of course, Roman Catholic as is the Principality of Monaco. Italy went republican in l946 ( By a Popular Election) and Portugal went Republican in l9l0 following an internal revolution- King and Crown prince assasinated in cold blood! so it goes.
