He was the same religion before He was baptized as after: Jewish. John's baptism, which Jesus received, served to confirm the baptized person as a better, more spiritual Jew, NOT the member of a new religion.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

Jesus Christ was the Word (Logos) before He became a man (John 1:1-3). He is the Son of God who gave the Law of God to Adam & Eve, the Patriarchs and then sent warnings to those who were disobedient via the Prophets and recorded the events in the Writings. These 3 parts (pluse the Psalms) of the Old Testament are called the 'Oracles of God' in Acts 7:38 and Romans 3:1-2 and are for our admonition as 1 Corinthians 10:11 notes.

Jesus Christ brought the Good News (Gospel) of the Kingdom of God and paid the price for the sins of all mankind by his death and resurrection asking His Father to send His Holy Spirit (Comforter and Helper) to strengthen and lead all who become partakers of His promise (Ephesians 3).

Jesus was born a Jew and came 1st to the Jews with the Good News. He expanded or fill to the top the Law of God, removing the unnecessary burdens the religious authorities placed upon the physical part of the Law and gave us the spiritual part of the Law. "For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ' (John 1:17). The part of the Law called the Judgements, which He may not of fully explained in His 3.5 year Ministry, He gave authority to the Apostles to do so. But no one was to change the Law of God - the 10 Commandments as some Christians believe can be done. This is called 'progressive revelation' circa 1st to 4th Centuries AD. This new concept allowed church leaders to revise doctrine to suit their perceptions of church needs - instead of adhering strictly to the teachings handed down by the Apostles.

So the correct way to answer the above is to say that the Law of God, 1st given to the Congregation(Church) of Israel was not corrected/amended and filled complete (Jude 3). The Church of God He established (called this 12x in Scripture) extends the Church of the Old Testament into the Church of God in the New Testament - like a phase 1 and phase 2 approach.

Lastly, Christ did not need to be baptized as the Son of God and Man who was without sin as you can read in Matthew 3:15-17.

What is the reason why Jesus was baptized by John?

Jesus fulfilled Scripture when he was water baptized. But He was not baptized for His sins- He was sinless. When Jesus was baptized, He was baptized with the Holy Spirit, and with the Spirit came power. Jesus never performed any miracles before he was baptized. He had the Holy spirit, but he was not baptized with the full power of the Spirit until John baptized him.
