Matthew was probably brought up in the Jewish religion (Law of Moses), but we do not know how closely he followed that religion. Matthew was a tax collector and although he could have followed in his heart he was considered as siding with the Romans because he collected taxes for them and no doubt had to pay some sort of homage to them.
