Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting, was the son of an Anglican priest and mathematics professor and a member of the Church of England.
He always held that religion was implicit to the goals of scouting. Initially his writing specified Christianity but as the world scouting movement spread across the globe he broadened his language to include other religions (in scouting - not necessarily his personal views).
"We aim for the practice of Christianity in their everyday life and dealings, and not merely the profession of theology on Sundays." - Scouting for Boys, 1908
"It [religion] does not come in [to scouting] at all. It is already there. It is a fundamental factor underlying Scouting and Guiding." - Religion and the Boy Scout and Girl Guides Movement-- an address, 1926.
