Salt Lake City, Utah is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church). This church did not develop out of any other religious group. It's founder, Joseph Smith Jr., was not affiliated with any denomination and the earliest church members came from many different churches.

The Mormons immigrated to Utah to avoid persecution in Missouri. They are known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
One religious group that came to the new world were the Pilgrims, who arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620 seeking religious freedom. Another group were the Puritans, who settled in Massachusetts Bay in the early 1600s to establish a religious community based on their beliefs.
The Mormons moved to Utah for religious freedom.

Brigham Young became a leader of the Mormoms and led the religious group to settle in Salt Lake City. Utah was not yet a US State. In 1848, Utah was ceded to the USA from Mexico.
