Romanian national census, March 2002: Total population: 21 680 974 Orthodox - 18 817 975 Romanian national census, March2002 Total population: 21 680 974 Orthodox: 18 817 975 Roman-catholic - 1 026 429, Greek-catholic - 191 556 Reformat-calvin - 701 077 Penticostal - 324 462, Baptist - 126 639, Adventist - 93 670 Moslem: 67 257 Unitarian: 66 944 etc.
The population is largely Orthodox Christian, but (mainly in Transylvania) there are also Catholics, Protestants (mostly Lutherans or Calvinists), Greek Catholics (a unique combination between the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches, subordinated to the Pope, whereas the Orthodox Church is independent). The former Turkish and Tatar invaders who have settled in the S-E of the country are Muslims, of course, and most of the Jewish community left the country between 1950 and 1980, so the number of Jews still living here is insignificant. There are also a small number of other Protestant denominations (Evangelicals, Baptists, etc), but they represent a minority.
More than 97 % of Romanians are of Greek-orthodox religion.
