The Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact to use the occupied nations of Eastern Europe as a buffer zone against the US and western Europe.
In response to NATO, The Soviet Union eventually went on to form what was known as the Warsaw Pact. This was an agreement within Soviet Countries that if someone were to attack one of them within the Pact, it would be considered an attack on ALL of them.
It was the opposite actually, Soviet Unions WARSAW pact was created because of NATO.
The Warsaw Pact was designed to stop the threat of invasion from Western Europe. This would have been an unlikely event.
