A writer has many responsibilities:

  • to write the best story he or she possibly can, and not to take the easy (lazy) way out when writing
  • to get the manuscript to the agent, editor, and publisher on time
  • to be polite to the readers when contacted, even if some of them are annoying and rude
  • to maintain copyrights and pursue any plagiarism he or she is aware of
  • to use his or her mind to the best of his or her abilities

Writers have variegated responsibilities, depending on the branch of their work. Here are just a few of the myriad of jobs involving writing.

Freelance Writer: The "most free" type of writing, this involves all prose forms. A freelance writer goes to companies and people in need of writing and offers up his or her services for a fee--this is how they make a living. Because of this flexibility, writers who enjoy making their own rules and writing a multitude of genres tend towards this career path. A freelance writer can be responsible for articles, poems, lyrics, novels, short stories, advertisements, plays, movie scripts, et cetera.

Journalist: A journalist works for a certain publishing company (usually one that prints either newpapers, magazines, or journals) and publishes articles under that publisher's name. Journalists usually are paid by the word, and are responsible to entertain and inform the reading community of their company. Many journalists also write books, for supplemental income.

Novelist: Novelists normally write fiction, and they publish full-length novels or collections of short stories. Famous novelists include Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike, Nathaneil Hawthorne, Stephenie Meyer, and Charles Dickens. Their sole responsibility is to write books that people want to read--books that will sell.
