A writer has many responsibilities:
Writers have variegated responsibilities, depending on the branch of their work. Here are just a few of the myriad of jobs involving writing.
Freelance Writer: The "most free" type of writing, this involves all prose forms. A freelance writer goes to companies and people in need of writing and offers up his or her services for a fee--this is how they make a living. Because of this flexibility, writers who enjoy making their own rules and writing a multitude of genres tend towards this career path. A freelance writer can be responsible for articles, poems, lyrics, novels, short stories, advertisements, plays, movie scripts, et cetera.
Journalist: A journalist works for a certain publishing company (usually one that prints either newpapers, magazines, or journals) and publishes articles under that publisher's name. Journalists usually are paid by the word, and are responsible to entertain and inform the reading community of their company. Many journalists also write books, for supplemental income.
Novelist: Novelists normally write fiction, and they publish full-length novels or collections of short stories. Famous novelists include Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike, Nathaneil Hawthorne, Stephenie Meyer, and Charles Dickens. Their sole responsibility is to write books that people want to read--books that will sell.
A writer has the responsibility to communicate clearly and effectively, to respect copyright laws and ethical guidelines, and to engage in continuous learning and improvement in their craft. Additionally, writers should strive to engage with diverse perspectives and voices in their work.
Often, a writer has the job of bringing the reader into the world of the story and creating an environment that allows the reader to connect with the environment being presented.
Additionally, the writer must write words on the page.

A writer's duties are what the writer's employer (or publisher) requires. The writer's responsibilities should be made clear by the one who has hired him/her. A writer who does not write for another party should set their own goals for their work.
A co-writer is someone who collaborates with another writer to create, develop, or edit a piece of writing. Working together, co-writers share ideas, expertise, and responsibilities to produce a joint work.
